Historic Building Recording Survey

Historic Buildings are a valuable resource that contributy to our understanding of both the past and the present.

Though seemingly unchanging, many historic buildings undergo ongoing and constant renewal, adaptation and repair, to meet the changing needs and aspirations of their users. Historic buildings represent a finite resource and an irreplaceable asset, which can be rich in historical, architectural, and communal value.

When work is proposed on such a structure, for example as part of a planning application or Listed Building Consent Application, they may be conditioned with the requirement to undertake an Historic Building Recording Survey.

Such assessments are a tool to provide an understanding a structure's historic significance and development over time and a way to record details that may be obscured or lost through change.

There are 4 levels of Historic Building Recording Survey that can be applied. These range from a high-level scene setting appraisal (Level 1), through to a highly detailed / measured survey of the building (Level 4). Whichever level of survey is required, they all play a specific and targeted role in assessing and recording the listed or historic structure, as part of the managed redevelopment of a site.

Our surveys are always conducted in accordance with the latest advice and guidance including Historic England’s ‘Understanding Historic Buildings: A Guide to Good Recording Practice’ (2016) and the Standard and Guidance for the 'Archaeological Investigation and Recording of Standing Buildings or Structures' from the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (2014).
