Reflections on the Cirencester Historic Windows Conference

At the end of June, I had the pleasure of attending the “Through the Looking Glass – A Future for Historic Windows” conference in Cirencester as part of my Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for AB Heritage.

This insightful event featured a wide range of discussions and lectures on the conservation and significance of historic windows, the energy efficiency of new versus old windows, and the importance of retaining original features where possible. Overall, it was an excellent experience that provided valuable knowledge for both my personal growth and for AB Heritage’s ongoing work.

Here are my five key takeaways from the event, which I hope will be helpful:

    Understanding Significance Before Replacement

One of the key messages from the conference was the importance of fully understanding the historical and architectural significance of old windows before considering their replacement. Historic windows often contain unique craftsmanship and materials that contribute to a building’s overall heritage value, and replacing them without proper assessment can lead to a loss of cultural significance.

    Retention Over Replacement

It’s clear that retaining historic windows is often better than replacing them. Many old windows can be upgraded to improve energy efficiency while preserving their original look and materials. This approach maintains the building’s historical integrity and avoids the character loss that comes with installing modern windows.

    Innovative New Windows

New technologies in window design have come a long way. I learned about the development of very thin glass that offers excellent energy efficiency, sometimes even removing the need for double glazing. These innovations are ideal for situations where original windows cannot be kept, allowing for modern performance without drastically changing the building’s appearance.

    Town Walk Insight
A particularly memorable part of the conference was the town walk, which allowed attendees to observe historic windows in their architectural context. This experience brought the conference themes to life, showcasing how windows are integral to the historic fabric of buildings and communities. It provided fresh perspectives on how windows contribute to the wider narrative of heritage conservation.

    Carbon Savings Through Retention

Retaining historic glass and windows not only preserves historical features but also contributes to sustainability by reducing the need for manufacturing new PVC or plastic windows. This approach helps lower carbon emissions associated with producing and transporting new materials, making it a more environmentally responsible choice.

Overall, the Cirencester Historic Windows Conference was an outstanding event. The knowledge I gained will be invaluable as we continue to provide expert advice to our clients on the preservation, repair, and enhancement of historic buildings.
