Andy Buckley, Managing Director
BA (Hons) Archaeology & Ancient History, MA Curatorial Archaeology, Member (MCIfA) Chartered Institute for Archaeologists
Andy founded AB Heritage in 2009 and has more than 25 years’ experience in archaeology and the historic environment. He studied Archaeology & Ancient History before completing an MA in Curatorial Archaeology, subsequently developing his career within commercial archaeology and heritage consultancy.
Since establishing AB Heritage, Andy has overseen its development from a small independent practice into a national archaeological and heritage consultancy. During that time, he has worked across a wide range of development projects, with experience encompassing archaeological and heritage assessment, heritage planning, project design and the commercial delivery of consultancy services.
As Managing Director, Andy is now principally responsible for the strategic and commercial direction of AB Heritage. His role includes overseeing company finances and performance, developing the systems and processes used to manage projects, allocating work and resources across the technical team, and working closely with the company’s senior team to maintain technical standards and provide clients with a consistent and proportionate service.
Having spent much of his career working directly on development-led archaeology and heritage projects, Andy has a particular interest in ensuring that consultancy work addresses the practical requirements of the planning process. This includes identifying heritage constraints at an early stage, establishing proportionate scopes of work, and ensuring clients receive clear advice on heritage risk, requirements and likely next steps.
Andy is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA) and led AB Heritage through becoming a CIfA Registered Organisation.
Outside of work, Andy enjoys spending time with his family, walking, reading, history and painting miniatures.
