We are pleased to share that AB Heritage Explorers, our education and outreach programme, has been featured in the latest edition of The Archaeologist magazine, published by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).
The article, written by Laura Buckley, AB Heritage’s Outreach Manager, explores how the programme is helping bridge the gap between professional archaeology and classroom learning by delivering hands-on workshops for children and young people.
Education, Outreach and Public Benefit in Archaeology
Since launching in 2024, AB Heritage Explorers has reached over 2,000 pupils across a growing number of schools, with many returning annually. Workshops combine real and replica artefacts, simulated excavations, and guided interpretation to introduce children to archaeological thinking in an engaging and accessible way.
The feature highlights the wider role of education in archaeology, showing how outreach supports public benefit, widens access to heritage, and helps young people develop critical thinking, evidential reasoning and curiosity-driven learning.
Alongside in-person workshops, our curriculum-linked teaching resources hosted on TES have attracted over 4,000 views and 1,000+ downloads, reflecting growing demand from schools for accessible heritage education materials.
This recognition reflects our commitment to making archaeology more accessible, inclusive and meaningful for younger audiences, while reinforcing the public value of heritage.
