Old Mill, Cornwall

As the only remaining evidence of a number of water powered mills within the small Cornish village of Yeolmbridge, AB Heritage was presented with a unique opportunity to provide an insight into, and to preserve through recording, a tangible link to the recent but disappearing past of the area.

Advising on redevelopment

A full programme of recording was undertaken by AB Heritage in advance of the Grade II Listed mill’s redevelopment for domestic purposes.

These early steps in the redevelopment process aided the easy transition of the locally significant structure into a new phase of its life, and ensuring its survival into the future.

AB Heritage provided a thorough Level II-III Historic Building Recording and report, highlighting the development of the mill from the early 19th century to its ‘grinding halt’ in the mid 20th century.

The building was largely unchanged externally, and despite the removal of the vast majority of mechanical components of the mill, the survival of ground floor timber hursts and a large number of  mechanical elements associated with a sack hoist in the mill’s loft space presented AB Heritage with the responsibility of undertaking a considered and sympathetic approach to creating an accurate record to preserve these aspects of the mill.
