Overview of Commissioned Heritage Statement
In the early summer of 2020, AB Heritage was presented with the unique challenge of producing a Heritage Statement covering two proposed renovation designs for a children’s play area located in Dane John Park, Canterbury.
A complex site
Dane John Park is a Grade II Registered Park and Garden, and forms part of Canterbury City Conservation Area. The existing play area was also located within the setting of the Scheduled Monuments of the City Walls and Dane John Mound.
The report therefore needed to assess both the suitability of the proposed renovation designs, as well as their potential impact on the importance of these heritage assets.
Guided by historic research, a thorough site visit, and consultation with the Local Planning Authority, AB Heritage consultants was able to provide a robust assessment of the key heritage issues posed by the design proposals
Less Than Substantial Harm
As a result of this, AB Heritage concluded that, while the new play area designs would both introduce a change to the existing baseline, both would result in Less Than Substantial Harm (in accordance with National Planning Policy Framework).
