Derby - 160 years ago

Agard St Archaeological Works: Coal BunkerAB Heritage Limited have been busy in Derby recently. Working on the site of the former tram works, close to the medieval core of the town, we have designed and managed a programme of archaeological works on behalf of our client, ensuring that remains of Derby's past are carefully recorded prior to the next stage in the sites long history of development.

Over recent months we have developed and implemented a suite of archaeological works, including: historic building recording of a listed wall and tram tracks; a programme of archaeological evaluation trenching; and targeted archaeological archaeological excavation works in an area where remains where found to survive.

Over the coming few weeks AB Heritage will be completing the detailed recording of the various foundations, cellars and gardens identified.

Gareth Talbot (Senior Heritage Consultant, AB Heritage) explained that "the features identified relate to a group of mid-19th century housing that once stood on the site.  It is important not only because it explains to us the history of this site but also because it helps us to create a more in-depth picture of life in Derby at that time.  It was a period of great expansion in Derby as an industrial centre, along with the East Midlands and England as a whole.

"By getting this glimpse into the conditions and ways in which these particular residents of Derby lived, we are gaining a more detailed and clearer picture of their day-to-day lives, helping us to trace how life has changed in the last 160 years".
